حرف تعریف the

به طور کلی باید بدانیم حرف تعریف the همانطور که از اسم آن برمیآید یک حرف معرفهساز (شناختساز) است.

اسم معرفه ((known در مقابل اسم نکره (un known) قرار دارد. اسم معرف اسمس است که برای خواننده یا شنونده شناخته شده باشد. البته این شناخته شدن به معنای شناخت سال تولد یا شماره شناسنامه کسی نیست همینکه اسمی یک بار به گوش از سوی گوینده یا نویسنده به گوش با چشم ما بخورد اگر برای بار دوم آن اسم مورد استفاده قرار گیرد تبدیل به معرفه میشود. یعنی بار اول نکره و بار دوم معرفه. (پسری را در در پارک دیدم. پسر فوتبال بازی میکرد.)

پسری نکره است و پسر معرفه است. در زبان فارسی علامت نکره (ناشناسا) یک در اول و ی در آخر است. علامت معرفه نداشتن علامت است! مقایسه کنید: مردی و مرد- کتابی و کتاب.

اوایل سال اگر چون بعضی از معلمها را نمیشناسیم میگوییم:

معلمی آمد. (A teacher came.)

 اما بعد از مدتی که همان معلم را میشناسیم میگوییم:

 معلم آمد(The teacher came.)

در زبان انگلیسی a علامت نکره (ناشناخته بودن) و the علامت معرفه (شناخته بودن) است.

گذشته از این اصل کلی حرف تعریف the کاربردهای و موارد منع کاربردهای دیگری دارد که ممکن است گاهی اندکی پیچیده به نظر آید.

 1. قبل از نقاط جغرافیایی از the استفاده میکنیم.

"the North Pole", "the equator"

2. قبل از نام رودخانه ها، دریاها و اقیانوسها از the استفاده میکنیم.
